This is the photo that I am working from for model
ntw4e.jpg
NTW-20 20mm anti-material rifle

I had to first cut the photo out using photoshop
ntw22.jpg
Picture is also brightened so I can see details

Same picture with buttstock created with cloning-

-techniques as well as new scope and midsection. Note the new handgrip, tripod and handle.

And here is my first prototype 3d model of the gun
ntwmodel1.jpg
Still needs work to lower the polygon count

I love this angle.
ntwmodel3.jpg
Wouldn't want to be on business end of this monster!

Yet another angle
ntwmodel4.jpg
This is my first model so I would appreciate feedback from the experts

One more. This is it for now.
ntwmodel5.jpg
Getting the textures right will be the real job. The pics above is for modeling not for final skin.

Update 08/14/02
I didn't want to post the polygon count on the above models because I thought it would be easy to lower them to something more reasonable for ghost recon.

Boy was I wrong!

First off the above models have a polygon count of .....3500!!!!!!
Now thats way above the 500-750 polygon limit for most ghost recon rifle models.  Now in my opinion the cannon is more along the lines of a anti-tank rocket weapon and I don't know what the limit for those models are.
Anyway, after alot of hard work I believe I have brought down the polygon count of the gun to something that probably won't cause too much lag.  The new polygon count for the cannon is 736!!!
Scroll above to look again at the original models and look below at the new models.......and tell me if you see much of a difference.

What do you think? Not bad for 736 polygons
lowntw3.jpg

I had to pick a different muzzle brake design
lowntw4.jpg

I was forced to redo some parts but I think I was-
lowntw5.jpg
-able to keep most of the curved shapes

I don't see much of a difference.....do you???

OPINIONS???

Model of m61a1 vulcan cannon

I want to model this also or get someone to help me

I will say again that I would appreciate some input on what I could do to get the textures right.  There are not really any good pics of this gun to model from.  I've done the best I can with the replacing of textures and I will lower or brighten them when the time comes to skin the model.  As I said before I will post them as soon as I am ready.  This is taking longer than I thought.
My hats off to the professional modders out there.
This mod is going to have gun files that are going to make the weapons ridiculously powerful but not out of touch with the reality of their real life counterparts...as soon as I figure out how to do that LOL
Update 08/14/02
From the ghost recon circles....Streinger has agreed to include my model in his yet to be released Ghost Recon South African Mod.  As soon as I get my models and Sniper Cannon mod done that is.

UPDATE 08/29/02
Here are some pics of my first skinning attempt for the gun.  I've gone ahead and put the gun in ghost recon so you can get an idea for what the final model will be like.  Note that this is the first skinning attempt.  I'm probably going to make some changes to the texture brightness or contrast.

Furthermore I've run into a problem.

I used 3rd party polygon reduction software to get the poly count down while retaining most of the original model's shapes.  Now, I can't easily detach the muzzle end or the scope ends so as to skin seperate textures for them.  For instance, for the barrel end would get a texture with a picture of a hole for the bullet to come out of.  And for the scope ends...they would get a picture of a reflective surface like a piece of real glass.
Since using the polygon reduction software the muzzle end for instance is made up of 5 triangled sections (instead of one flat surface).  I have to figure out how to detach all 5 sufaces and apply the muzzle end texture to all five combined as one.
If you have any ideas email them to me!  I would appreciate it.

NOW TAKE A LOOK...

Yes, the gun is scaled properly and is that big
ntwskin3.jpg

I know it needs improvement but overall.....
ntwskin4.jpg
....What do you think???

Yet another
ntwskin8.jpg

Don't mess with this guy!
ntwskin6.jpg

Even though the gun is very big it is made of.....
ntwskin2.jpg
light enough materials so it is one man portable.

UPDATE 08/31/02

I thought you might want to take a look at a few pics of the gun in a wire frame perspective. These are for those seriously interested in the more detailed aspects of modeling.

TAKE A LOOK...

look at all the triangles....ooo....ahhhhh....

Notice the triangles on the buttstock

Another view

I was able to delete all non-essential faces....I hope

Notice the mid-section

I am particularly proud of how curved it is

This project certainly has been a labor of love. The process has been a pain at the same time though even with the enjoyment. I hope you guys out there might benefit from my experience and are able to take on other projects yourself.
I've learned that you must use as many simple primitive objects as possible with low polygon counts to begin with.
Use lines and simple boxes extruded to what you want. I also suggest using Ngons. They are very helpful and simulate cylinders with a good enough appearance while keeping the poly counts low.
Then, if you must use a high poly object such as a cylinder then try to use 3rd party polygon reduction software.
If you do end up using such programs I suggest saving each high poly count object that you want lowered seperately in 3dsm and then applying the reduction software to the file. At the end assemble and merge all your objects into one file.
That way you will increase the chance of keeping the general appearance of your model very close to your original vision. If you apply the reduction software to the entire model at the same time then your model will look less like what you want.
But I leave it to you to experiment.

In the next update I hope to show you the weapon with the final skin. STAY TUNED......

Update 09/18/02

Well....just a small update.  Here are a couple of pics of a Desert Eagle .50 cal with 8" barrel and scope.  Plus, one pic of the Big Lone Eagle single shot hunting gun. These models were contributed by MALEBOGIA and I hope to incorporate this gun and the other two in the Sniper Cannon Mod when completed.  Enjoy.

Update 10/11/02

Here are 3 pics of another weapon that I want to do....
The Ferret .50 cal m16 conversion.

The first pic is a full sized view
